I am currently a college student at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. I will be graduating in December 2007. Yay! With all this excitement, I was worried about how I would repay my student loans. I began researching my options and I have decided that consolidating my loans would be my best bet.

I have begun this task using http://www.premierstudentloan.com .

By consolidating my loans, I will only have to send out one payment a month, rather than several. This will help a lot! Also, by consolidating to one payment, my payments will be reduced greatly and the amount of time to repay is extended with a lower interest rate! And…..all the interest that I pay on my loans is tax deductible!

Consolidation of my student loans was the best idea yet! Premier Student Loans is a great site with tons of valuable information, such as: relevant information for each state, easy application, and so much more!

Red Raiders Mobile Campus

Posted by tiffanyshay23 on April 30, 2007

“Red Raiders Mobile Campus is TTU’s approved text messaging service. It connects students to organizations, clubs, faculty, restaurants and stores. And, as a member, you can customize your profile to select which campus organizations and merchant categories you want to receive messages and discounts from. This opt-in, permission-based service allows members to stay connected and in-the-know via instant text messages. It’s fast. It’s fun. It’s free. Need another reason to join?”

“As a Member you receive messages that matter to you. Whether it’s learning that a class is cancelled (yippee!), your intramural softball practice time has changed or your favorite sandwich shop is offering a 2-for-1 deal for Red Raiders Mobile Campus Members. The best part is that you get to choose which campus organizations and retail categories you want to receive messages and discounts from. It’s the power to stay connected—right at your fingertips.”

“Many students are not involved in any groups, but with our service you can still receive important messages from the University, such as, classes are cancelled due to a storm, drop/add has been extended, etc.”

I joined Red Raiders Mobile Campus solely for the text messages that can be sent in the event of an emergency. Its an easy way to learn of unsafe situations quickly and easily.

Facebook and your job

Posted by tiffanyshay23 on April 29, 2007

If Facebook profiles were job applications, how many of us would get hired? Probably very few. Students take this statement with a grain of salt. However, I know from personal experience that employers look at facebook profiles. Where I work now as a student, they check facebook profiles just to get a feel of the person before the interview. Actually before deciding to set-up an interview. My boss has cancelled one interview in particular because of the information that was posted on the prospective employee’s page.

Facebook Network Pages

Posted by tiffanyshay23 on April 29, 2007

Facebook has now made network pages, which will soon be available to all networks. Here, network members, events, trends, and demographic information is displayed.

http://ttu.facebook.com/networks/?ref=wn

Everything that is on this network page can be accessed by the network member, but now it is all in one place. The network page has the number of members at Texas Tech and these members can be browsed. It also has upcoming events. I think this feature could be used to many organizations advantages as well as Texas Tech University’s advantage. It also has an area that displays popular groups, posted items, and notes among the networks members. Users can also create flyers, previously known as advertisements. These flyers are priced according to how many times one wants the flyer to come up on Facebook.com.

There is also a discussion board. The Tech discussion board, in particular, isnt used very much. One reason for this I believe would be because the posts are not organized in any way except by the time and date of the post.

I think that Facebook.com has addressed a need to put the entirity of a network in one, easily accessible place. However, I think that this addition has many more possibilities that could be embraced by the network members.

Universities, Facebook to notify students in emergency

Posted by tiffanyshay23 on April 23, 2007

After the tragedy at Virginia Tech, many universities are looking for ways to improve their communication to the students. Wednesday, April 18, Facebook.com sent instructions to universities on how to link a document within a PIER to a Facebook page so students that were subscribed can get the emergency notification.

University of Houston as well as the University of North Carolina have already tested this emergency notification system and are working to complete the linkage.

Here is the detailed information as well as directions for setting up a PIER.

Facebook: Virginia Tech

Posted by tiffanyshay23 on April 22, 2007

Less than 6 hours after the Virginia Tech massacre, 38 global groups bearing the name “Cho Seung Hui” were formed. This number was increasing rapidly as students posted messages of condolence and sympathy, questions asking if certain individuals were alright, as well as just voicing their opinion on the situation.

Texas Tech also has a group called “Texas Tech Pray for VT!”

“Dedicated to the lives lost on April 16th, 2007. Keep the families and friends of the VT community in your thoughts. Show your support by joining and telling your friends to join. Hokies United…We will never forget this day…”

Students from around the world have come together on many social networking sites, many on Facebook, and organized prayers, tributes, fundraisers, and memorials for the students and faculty of Virginia Tech.

The internet has become the most widely used medium among college students. College students use social networking not only for entertainment but it has now been demonstrated as a way of communicating safety and issues as well as a place where people react to what is going on around them.

Facebook Facelift

Posted by tiffanyshay23 on April 22, 2007

A week ago, Facebook got a facelift, as you can probably tell when you logged on Wednesday morning. It is said to have a more user-friendly approach. It has a streamlined navigation and the messaging works in a different, easier way.

“Facebook is a technology company with a highly iterative development process and we’re constantly improving how the site works,” Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, said in a statement. “Our goal with the latest changes is to help users navigate the site more easily and share information more efficiently.”

Where there used to be a ‘My Messages’ tab, has now been replaced with ‘Inbox.’ This enables users to send a message to a group of people rather than just one person at a time. I dont know how I feel about this new change.

Facebook is trying to change the sense of community and web 2.0. Facebook has a target audience of 15-25. They want to reach out to crowds older than 25. Which Myspace has already achieved.

Facebook Toolbar for Firefox

Posted by tiffanyshay23 on April 13, 2007

There is now a Facebook Toolbar for the Firefox Internet Explorer. This toolbar can only be used in Firefox 2.0. This toolbar has a Facebook Search that you can use no matter where you are. Icons on the toolbar also let you know how many Facebook messages are in your inbox, how many times you have been poked, and friend requests. I previously wrote about Facebook allowing users to share stuff from all over the internet, on the toolbar, click the share button if you would like to share the current page that you are on. This allows you to post it to your page or share it with your friends.
