Facebook: Virginia Tech

Posted by tiffanyshay23 on April 22, 2007

Less than 6 hours after the Virginia Tech massacre, 38 global groups bearing the name “Cho Seung Hui” were formed. This number was increasing rapidly as students posted messages of condolence and sympathy, questions asking if certain individuals were alright, as well as just voicing their opinion on the situation.

Texas Tech also has a group called “Texas Tech Pray for VT!”

“Dedicated to the lives lost on April 16th, 2007. Keep the families and friends of the VT community in your thoughts. Show your support by joining and telling your friends to join. Hokies United…We will never forget this day…”

Students from around the world have come together on many social networking sites, many on Facebook, and organized prayers, tributes, fundraisers, and memorials for the students and faculty of Virginia Tech.

The internet has become the most widely used medium among college students. College students use social networking not only for entertainment but it has now been demonstrated as a way of communicating safety and issues as well as a place where people react to what is going on around them.

It’s been great to see so many college students come together, and it’s great that we, college students, have an outlet like Facebook to do this. I think Facebook seperated themselves from MySpace because of this. Seems as though Facebook is better for community…esp. for students.
